Portrait of a Virginia Opossum

Mother nature’s clean up crew, the Virginia opossum helps to remove rotting plants and decaying animals. They help to control the spread of disease in the process and have picked up some very unique defense skills in the process. Perfectly replicating the appearance of decaying animal, when startled the opossum”plays dead”, involuntarily collapsing for 40 minutes to 4 hours. The Virginia opossum also do more than their fair share of controlling tick populations each year and are known to feast on rodents and venomous snakes.
